Approximately Up RCS Thrusters: Why They Fail

The single most-searched problem in this game

More people search for RCS not working in Approximately Up than for almost any other specific problem, and “which side is down for thrusters” is close behind. There is a good reason: RCS failures all look the same in flight — the ship does not respond, or responds on the wrong axis — while having four completely different causes.

Cause 1: the labels were wrong, and it was not your fault

The RCS Controller shipped with Yaw and Roll swapped on its front panel relative to the output ports on the back. Patch 1.0.010, released August 10, 2026, swapped the front panel to match the rear ports, and the note says plainly that the change was made to reduce confusion.

This matters beyond the fix date, because it means any tutorial recorded before August 10, 2026 may show a wiring that no longer matches the panel, and any build saved before that date was wired against the old labelling. If your yaw input produces roll, check the build date of whatever you are following before you rewire anything.

Cause 2: no power path

RCS thrusters need power like anything else, and power is a cable run you make yourself. Two things to verify:

  • The Fuse Box has not tripped. It could not be turned back on at all until patch 1.0.006 fixed it.
  • The cable actually reaches. Since patch 1.0.009, plugging a cable into a port on a Frame Quarter With Ports surfaces the same port on the opposite side of the entire connected frame chain, with A/B/C/D labels matching at both ends — which makes long runs easier, but also means checking the label at both ends is meaningful.

Cause 3: geometry, not wiring

RCS produces torque by pushing at a distance from the centre of mass. Two placement mistakes produce a ship that responds weakly or not at all:

  • Thrusters mounted symmetrically about the axis they are meant to rotate cancel each other out.
  • Thrusters mounted close to the centre of mass have almost no leverage, so the same thrust produces a fraction of the rotation.

Since patch 1.0.104 you can check the mass side of this in-game with the Massmeter, which reports the mass of the ship it is mounted on and updates automatically after decoupling. Before that block existed there was no way to measure it at all.

Cause 4: something is loose

If RCS works and then stops mid-flight, and the ship is also behaving oddly, check for a disconnected component. Patch 1.0.110 traced a whole class of mysterious mid-flight failures to a single unattached part colliding with others and snowballing, and added an exclamation mark in H mode on any component connected to nothing. That check takes seconds and covers a failure mode that is otherwise almost undiagnosable.

There is also an open report of RCS Pitch Minus randomly failing, raised in the Steam discussions and not yet closed by a patch note. If you have eliminated the four causes above, it is worth knowing that thread exists rather than rebuilding a working ship.

Attitude control is only useful if you can see attitude. The Gyro-Line draws a reference across the view and had its middle line highlighted in patch 1.0.100 to make screen centre readable. The Axis Rotometer reports rotation on the local axes — it has output correctly signed values only since patch 1.0.006, and its hitbox was fixed in 1.0.008.
